This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
As a teacher in a low-income/high-poverty school district, my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. Despite the many challenges they face, my goal is to keep them motivated to learn every single day.
My students are creative, intelligent, and capable of learning every single day!
Many of them are being raised in transitional housing and receive a free lunch based on their socioeconomic status. These things may prevent them from getting ahead early in life and may not provide them with the life experiences many of us see as "typical". From the minute they walk in the door of my classroom I focus on their potential and growth while they are with me. By doing this in a creative and positive way with engaging materials, I am hopeful my students will reach their academic success!
My Project
Many students diagnosed with disabilities have a difficult time learning curriculum as easily as those without disabilities, especially math. In my classroom, I have twelve students with varying disabilities.
My students love the idea of math since it is so concrete, but tend to struggle with learning specific concepts.
Their disabilities include other health impairment, emotionally disturbed, learning disability, and autism. With these materials, it would allow my students to learn many of the difficult concepts they struggle with, specifically fractions, division, and place value. Due to the lack of funding in my school, it is difficult to obtain engaging, fun, and current activities they will want to use, and more importantly, activities that will help them be successful and learn.
