My Students
A family that plays together, stays together. Our goal is to provide a positive atmosphere where everyone has fun learning together. Do you remember feeling left out or not good enough? Math Night is an event where everyone can participate and have a pleasant, enjoyable experience.
I teach at a small, rural Title I school.
My students range in age from nine to fourteen. I teach math to six classes of awesome fifth and sixth graders. The students enjoy our interactive learning environment and enjoy the experience of school. The average per capita income for my county is $17,225. The poverty rate in my county in 2008 was 21.5%. The official U.S. poverty rate in 2008 was 13.2% (U.S. Census Bureau). With today's economy I am sure that the statistics are even more daunting. Approximately eighty percent of my students receive free or reduced price lunch.
My Project
I have requested two copies of "Bullying in Schools," math games, such as Sum Swamp for the lower grades and Head Full of Numbers for the upper grades, along with dice, counters and other math manipulatives. The requested resources will help our Math Night continue to grow. Such an event provides many benefits and helps to create a closer knit community. All of the students will benefit from practicing math in a fun and engaging atmosphere. Additionally, they will benefit from the quality time spent with family, friends, teachers and staff in a relaxed, yet upbeat and educational atmosphere. As important, the more opportunities that we have to interact with each other in a relaxed and enjoyable atmosphere, the less bullying issues we will have.
This project is important to me because I know that the community will benefit from math night.
Positive, lasting relationships will form and help us to eliminate bullying in our schools. The students will benefit from interacting with each other and adults from the community, in a friendly and educational environment.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
