Math Game Madness

My Project

Every year brings such a unique group of students. This year, I have a group of kiddos who love math and tend to finish their independent work early. During their Math Choice time, this group has loved playing the math games available in our classroom, like Rummikub and RACK-O. It would be wonderful to expand their options both to provide variety as well as to expose them to games they wouldn't normally have the chance to play at home or elsewhere.

Math games offer kids the opportunity to think flexibly, utilize patterns, use mental math skills, work collaboratively (often with kids they wouldn't normally work with), use problem solving skills, and learn how to lose graciously.

The best part about this project is that these items will be used almost daily - not something that will simply sit on a shelf or get use only during indoor recess. In addition, most of these games offer a low floor, high ceiling opportunity. This means that the games aren't limited to a certain subset of students. Any student can play with success, yet many of the games offer opportunities for deeper or greater strategy.
