it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
"Can you do it?!" I yell at my class..."YES WE CAN!" the students yell back. This is our motto in math class, we can do anything if we work hard and focus.
My students are the lowest performing first graders in math.
We have grouped this class based on ability so they are able to start at the lowest foundation and work there way up. This is the second year we have tried ability-based grouping in math. Last year was the first and what a difference it made! All of the lowest incoming first graders were put into my class and they all left on or above grade level. This is due in part to the team teaching in the classroom and the math skills groups we have developed.
My Project
At the end of last year we looked back and thought about what we could do better. How could we improve our program? The thing that stuck out the most to me was getting the parents more involved. The more involved the parent the better the student will do. We had open house a few weeks ago and out of the 21 students I have, 3 parents showed up. This was disappointing, but I have decided to have another night for parents to come learn math games and take manipulative's home to work with their student. I will provide food and door prizes! I hope I am able to send the parents home with ideas on how to help their student and the materials to do so.
If we are able to get this class on or above grade level by the end of the year it will drastically change their school experience for the rest of their lives.
If they are able to play the math games at home that we play in class they will succeed. For the most part the reason these children are so low and need to make up 2 years of knowledge is because they were not exposed to any math or games at home.
