Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I currently have a group of 20 bilingual second grade students in a dual language classroom. They live in a low income, high poverty stricken inner city community in northern New Jersey. My students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom due to their socioeconomic status and their varying linguistic abilities. This is a new dual language program in our school.
They are an energetic, inquisitive, and hard working group of students who have many challenges, but despite that they still come to school excited and ready to learn!
My Project
I would like to add a variety of math games in the math centers area so that my students will be able to take control of their learning and or to reinforce a skill taught.
My students need center activities to increase their math skills while keeping them actively engaged.
My role as a teacher is to facilitate student engagement while differentiating to ensure learning. This does not necessarily mean I need to stand-up in front of a classroom and teach. I want the students to use the strategies and skills taught and apply them while they work independently in math centers. Students need to be involved in their work in order to learn. These center activities will reinforce what we are learning using different mediums to keep the students engaged while they practice skills and strategies in a fun way.
These centers will keep my students working on various math skills by reinforcing what we have learned while also teaching the students how to work together.
