My Students
As I enter my 15th year in teaching, I look back and reflect on what makes my class different from those of my colleagues? The answer is simple, I have the ability to fully embrace and adapt to any teaching situation. I have worked in 6 different schools including charter, private and public schools across the East and South Bay areas. Some schools were located in more affluent areas while others in more rural and urban neighborhoods. When someone asks me if I left a school because of the students my answer was always the same, “there are many reasons but my students were never one of them.” Recently, we had to move campuses due to construction delays and all of our supplies were left behind in the process. The students in this Math Essentials class do not have a textbook. These supplies will be instrumental in building my curriculum this year which will include a number of more tactile lessons to boot confidence in the subject matter for these students who generally find math challenging.
My Project
My goal is to help students who generally struggle with math concepts build more confidence in this subject matter. By introducing math in a less abstract manner such as incorporating more tactile activities, I believe students will naturally grow an appreciation for the content and its uses in their day to day lives. Each student will receive their own set of art supplies to use during class activities which will help bring more equity among the students in the class as well as limit the risk of sharing during a pandemic.
