My students need a mathematical role model to build their confidence and understanding of middle school math. Danica is an engaging author who brings math to life in these 20 copies of, "Math Doesn't Suck: How to Survive Middle-School Math".
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
How many times have you heard someone say, "I'm just not good at math." I believe EVERYONE can be good at math and I want to launch a math book club at my school to bring math to life for our girls.
We are a Title One middle school in a high poverty area.
The kids don't always view themselves as mathematicians. I am targeting girls to begin to change the "I can't do math" paradigm. They not only CAN do math, but they can HAVE FUN with it, too! Changing this belief system will help change this community.
My Project
We are going to read the book, "Math Doesn't Suck", and re-create the scenarios she offers to develop concrete understandings of math concepts. For instance, just how many lipsticks can be distributed to gift bags at a party? Or how do you predict movie ticket sales based on previous records? Kids connect to media driven ideas, and I believe this book hooks them in just the right way.
Sometimes, you have to believe FOR a child until they can believe for THEMSELVES.
I believe in them, and this book will help them bridge to a new understanding of themselves, i.e. I'M GOOD AT MATH!
