My Students
I work in a school in the South Bronx where most of my students are English Language Learners. I teach at a Title I school, meaning that all of our students are from low income households. Many of my students can not afford things that other children can, and oftentimes their parents can't afford basic school supplies. Even though this is their situation, my students are so loving, caring and eager to learn. They love coming to school, exploring the materials in the classroom and building friendship and community within our class. This year learning will be very different and I want to ensure that they will all have the supplies they need to be successful whether in school or learning remotely.
I work hand in hand with our families in order to help their children thrive and succeed in our class.
One of the most exciting times for my students, and for me, is having the parents spend time in our class and work side by side with their child on activities such as making play-dough, painting t-shirts and parents reading with and to their children. Priceless!
My Project
Due to COVID-19, our school system has changed drastically and parents have the option of having their children learn remotely or attending school some days. These materials will be divided so that each child can have their own individual set. It is my goal to do my part in promoting learning while reducing the spread of germs in the classroom, These materials will allow children to be safe and provide hand-on learning.
As an Early Childhood educator, I understand the importance of effectively teaching children using manipulatives.
Our Kindergarten math goals include explaining their thinking orally, drawing pictures and writing equations, adding and subtracting within 5 with mastery, counting on from any given number and counting by 10's. These materials: counters, unifix cubes and ten frames will help support our students as they learn to add, subtract, count-on and count by 10's. They will also
In class, I've seen how my students are able to work better individually, as well as in small groups. They are also able to support or reject a peer's answer because they can physically see the math problem. Lastly, I see how my students' are able to self-correct when solving math problems, which boosts their confidence and allows them to approach more sophisticated math problems with greater eagerness.
