This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Can you imagine how children view math these days? So many tests, but not enough time to play and explore! Playing is the best way for children to learn and internalize essential mathematical skills.
I am a second grade teacher in a school located in the Bronx in need of improvement.
My students come from all different backgrounds. My school is situated in a neighborhood where people work two, sometimes three jobs to make ends meet.
Many of my students go to an after school program because their parents are working. My classroom is almost like a first home to my students. They feel safe and nurtured as well as excited to learn new information. We have a trusting relationship and enjoy spending time together. All of my students receive free lunch due to their economic status.
My Project
I find myself thinking how school was different when I was in second grade. I don't remember taking so many tests or being asked what we ask our children to know now.
I remember having fun learning in stations and feeling good about school. I want to give that feeling to my students now! I want them to think that counting and knowing the various math skills can be fun and exciting. I would love to introduce math games to them as part of our daily routines.
I am requesting interactive math games and centers in order for my students to practice essential skills. I need your help in donating to this project so my class can have the various math games that would be used on a daily basis.
I will conduct my expected mini-lesson and after that my students will practice the various math skills using the math games. I will work with groups who need extra support.
Please help me make math fun for my students!
I really believe that learning does not need to be a chore. It must be exciting! The math centers/games would be a great resource for me to make this a reality.
