Math Basics

My students need hands on math manipulatives (counting kits, match-ups, learning charts) to help with sorting, counting, adding, number sense and number recognition. Please help my inner city Kinder ELL students!

My Students

Do you remember what it was like the first time you entered Kindergarten? All the amazing and fun items to play with. Little did you know you were learning at the same time. Imagine if you were 5 again however, this time you speak little to no english and you are enrolled in an inner city school.

I currently have 20 students enrolled in my Kindergarten ELL classroom.

Not only do I have the challenge of their language background but the school itself is an inner city school. We are a title one school, which means most if not all of my students are free and reduced lunch. They are eager students who want to learn the most they can. Each day is a new beginning for them. I want them to reach all that they possibly can. One way to do this is by offering as much hands on manipulatives I possibly can. When they are engaged in hands on activities rather than worksheets their learning process increases 90% faster. The funds the school offers me are limited and what funds I receive I need to purchase crayons, scissors, glue, pencils, construction paper ect. The students feel safe and cared for at school. I want them to gain as much as they possibly can while enjoying life and learning at the same time.

My Project

Math concepts are easy to grasp…with tons of kid-pleasing manipulatives. The students will explore early math concepts…as they count up bugs! The magnetic math board comes with 20 numeral magnets and 30 corresponding picture magnets. Children simply stick the numeral magnets in the left column of the board…then add bug magnets as they count from 1 to 20! I want to represents numbers in a variety of ways. The items I am asking for you to donate for my classroom will help them write the numerals, tactile number cards for printing practice…hook & loop candy pieces for counting…and activity cards for building & solving simple addition problems. There’s even a “piggy bank” with hook & loop coins for basic money practice and a clock with a movable hour hand for introducing time-telling concepts. I will be able to use these items in whole group introduction to different mathematic concepts and reinforce these concepts in math centers or independent practice.

Math manipulatives would help me to produce more successful students.

I would be able to reach visual and auditory learners as well as those children who are hesitant to verbalize out loud . These manipulatives would also make math very enjoyable . For these reasons, I am requesting these hands on math manipulative to enrich and aid in my students' educational program.
