Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Every day at the start of math time I ask my students, "Are you ready to start the math party?" They then yell, "Yes, Mrs. Cepeda let's rock on!" I then tell them exactly what they are in charge of learning that day during math time. They like to know exactly what they need to know.

About 85% percent of my students come from low income families.

They love to learn and are intrigued every day to learn new and exciting ways to solve math problems. My students are learning subtracting with regroup, addition with regrouping, multiplication, and division in second grade. They are learning Algebra! My students are sweet and respectful. They love to use the three computers in our classroom. I have forty six wonderful second graders students.

My Project

My students love to learn and dislike to waste any math time. It would be much easier to have a mini iPad in small group instruction so I can just demonstrate real life situations where math is involved. I draw pictures of how math is used in our daily lives but my students would be intrigued to be able to see real images. I would like to use the mini iPad in small group to demonstrate realia. I would also use a new application that would help my students use bar model which is crucial for my students in order to solve word problems. Bar models leads into a deep understanding of Algebra.

My project will leave a long lasting impact on all my students that come through my classroom.

I want my students to say, "I love Math!" I want to be that teacher that clarified an understanding of the fundamentals of Math. Such as, "Why do we regroup when adding?" Whatever career my students decide to choose they will need to understand Math.
