Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students live in a rural district, with lots of low-lying farmland and pastures, and have recently experienced flooding due to Hurricane Harvey.
They are children, full of potential, and I am grateful to be their teacher.
I have academic students, students who excel in a trade, and students who do both. Our school is well-varied in the options it provides our students. My goal is not to push my students towards college, but to push them to their limits. I can't wait to see how high they soar!
My Project
Each of the games was specifically chosen to focus on math or science skills that my students can practice. The math bingo, and other math games will help build the skills that so many of our students are lacking. Some of the games, such as Compounded, Ion, and Covalence I personally own and have created simplified instructions and small "cheat sheets" that will help younger players or English Language Learners follow along. The molecule building kits have been a fun way to create fast molecule-building competitions. My students should have a great time teaching their parents to build molecules!
Because such a large percentage of our students have Spanish-speaking parents, one of my goals for the project would be to make useful resources to go along with the games: English-Spanish glossaries, illustrations, and even videos of the game being played.
Time away from home, where families can focus on each other and just having fun- that's the main goal of this project. By choosing educational games, parents and students both can see that the skills that may seem boring in the classroom can have some fun applications! This would be a school-wide open invitation, so it has the potential to impact a large portion of the community.
And because this is a Family Game Night (which will hopefully become a monthly event *fingers crossed*), I made sure to include educational toys and games for my students' younger siblings. The books, stickers, bookmarks, emoji erasers, small puzzles are all meant to be given as prizes for winners of the games, just to make the event a bit more fun.
