This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
I teach pre-Algebra classes and Foundational math classes. Kids can't do math because they are afraid of it, hate it or both. But when you have an infrastructure of apathy and ignorance borne out by covid and substitute teachers, math gaps emerge that complicate the future of the next generation. Perhaps experiential learning can change that. We are requesting rocket models and lauch pads.
Today, I shared with my students what I have been doing with my son.
They liked it. One student didn't care for it, but everyone else seemed to like it. One student who in the past demonstrated indifference and ignorance seemed to come out of his shell a bit as he was a second recorder.
My students are like a lot of kids. They are black and brown and many of them are immigrant households with both parents who love their kids. We have a few kids that demonstrate some problems, but they are not the majority. They are 8th graders so much of that awkwardness that comes with middle school is wearing off. Kids are learning and changing. They are growing up.
