My name is Wesley H.
Underwood. My career and passion is educating young adults in Middle School. Yes, I know! Call me CRAZY. Students at this age are like sponges. They can absorb information quickly and effectively if only you can get them to engage.
However, it is very challenging to obtain their attention. Such is the problem that I face each day of school. How can I get my students to engage in the lesson? I teach 6th - 8th grade mathematics, co-teach Civics, and co-teach Language Arts. The learning in these classes takes care of itself if the students will just engage in the lessons. Oh, I forgot to tell you that I teach students who are Neurodivergent and who have Disabilities such as ADD, ADHD, ODD and Behavioral Issues. I teach a self-contained ESE Behavioral Focus Unit which integrates with a 6th - 8th grade Social Thinking Unit. It is a challenging assignment, but I wouldn't change my teaching assignment for any other! I co-teach Language Arts with Mrs. Davis in the Social Thinking (Autistic Unit). Our school is a Title I school which means that we have a high number of students who live in poverty. My students have disabilities and more than 50% of them live in poverty. Studies show that they are already at a disadvantage of being successful. I along with the other teachers in our units strive to change that narrative.
I request your assistance in purchasing a class set of the book series Math Inspectors Books 1 - 5. This book series, will help me engage my students in both Language Arts, Reading, and Mathematics. The series will be a difference maker in helping me to encourage my students to engage in their learning.
