My students need 58 children's books including "Cubes, Cones, Cylinders, & Spheres", "Millions of Cats", and "Mission of Addition Cleary" that investigate Math concepts we are learning about and have the opportunity to explore these concepts through literature.
My students come from a low-income neighborhood and all of my students receive free breakfast and lunch. My students need to see what the wonderful world of literature has to offer...even in Math class. They do not have the means to head to local libraries so I need to provide them with resources.
My students are a group of 50 students (25 in each class) who attend a public pilot school in Massachusetts.
They all come from low-income families that describe their neighborhoods as dangerous. They are in inclusion classrooms which means there are regular education and special education students in the classes mixed together. My students are bright and vibrant individuals who are all looking to get a great education. I have students who want to be doctors, teachers, lawyers, artists, business men/women, and even one who wants to be the President of the United States (he has a VERY detailed plan as to how he will accomplish this goal).
My Project
My students' conceptual knowledge of fractions, decimals, percents, place value, addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, geometry and probability will increase with the use of these books. I will be able to use these books as read-alouds in class, as take-home book bags, and have them available for students to read when they desire. These books will provide real life examples of how these concepts are found in their lives and provide a concrete foundation to build upon with the use of the manipulatives I received in my previous Donorschoose project.
My project is important because it will help provide them with the conceptual knowledge needed to succeed in school and to later succeed with all of their life goals.
My students need any extra support they can get and these books will be another way for me to capture their interest, differentiate my instruction, and push my students to reach their potential.
More than three‑quarters of students from low‑income households
