My Students
I am a special education teacher in a Title I, self-contained elementary school located in New York City. I currently teach a Kindergarten - 2nd grade fully remote learning class made up of students diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder and other various learning disabilities. Students in my classroom have poor fine and gross motor skills and limited language. They are all visual, kinesthetic learners and require hands-on materials to aid them in reaching their individual goals via our remote classroom. By varying the approaches to learning based on each student’s needs, there is greater opportunity for every student to learn and grow.
Even though we are a fully remote classroom, my students still require hands-on activities that provide them with engaging, exciting and interesting opportunities to practice, enrich, and enhance their learning, all while encouraging independence and providing students with an abundance of opportunities and supports to achieve success at their own level.
My Project
Having these hands-on math and language arts materials, in my students homes, will take their eyes off of the computer screen and get them hands-on in their education. The counting tubes, ice cream cones and stamps will help some students learn, hands-on, to count and identify basic numbers. The large dice and snap addition game will help some of my students begin to learn to add! The various alphabetic games and activities will help my students learn to identify the alphabetic letters as well as begin to learn basic sounds. The alphabetic letters and numbers along with the paint will allow students to create math and ELA art!
The requested activities will provide exciting and interesting opportunities for my students to learn, practice, enrich, and enhance their math and ELA learning, all while encouraging independence and provide students with an abundance of opportunities to achieve success at their own level.
Remote learning, though a computer screen is challenging for most students but especially for those students who already have so many learning challenges. These educational games and activities will help my students learn the way they learn best, HANDS ON!
