This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
I'm teaching an inclusion class with 10 general education students and 6 children with exceptional needs. The children with exceptional needs require individualized instruction in language development, social emotional development, and behavior. Please help me create a classroom where children understand their feelings and the feelings of others. The fidget toys, calming weighted stuffed animals, special chairs, and books will help my students learn to deal with different stressful situations. These materials will help students learn to relax whenever they experience any upsetting situation or sensory overload.
Some of the students may feel an overwhelming sense of discomfort when over-stimulated /under-stimulated, or when facing unpleasant experiences.
Having an area in my classroom where students can engage with fidget toys or listen to a social story to help them regain control of their emotions, will help them be ready to learn academic skills. They will be ready to learn, attend to lessons, become more effective at socializing, communicate emotions effectively, advocate for themselves, and will be able to be more effective when socializing with others.
I would love to have an area where teachers can provide social emotional and behavior instruction using books, stuffed animals, special chairs, and toys. It would be a place in the classroom where children can safely take short breaks when needing time away from the large group. Sometimes, all students, regardless of their disability; may need to step away from overwhelming environments, even for a short quiet breaks.
I also hope to use the books and special chairs to teach meditation, mindful breathing exercises, or movement activities to help students learn to self regulate to be ready to learn.
I would greatly appreciate your help to provide material that will help students self-regulate and develop social emotional skills.
