This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

As a Speech Language Pathologist working in an elementary school, COVID-19 has significantly impacted our students by limiting in-person learning, thereby restricting access to essential hands-on speech and language therapy. This has delayed progress in language development for many students, particularly those who rely on the individualized attention and tailored resources that in-person sessions provide.

The younger children missed crucial social growth opportunities, and our older students faced challenges with inconsistent access to social interaction and group work.

Working parents were often unable to provide the necessary oversight and support for remote learning. Some of the areas that were weakened include exposure to books/stories, social skills with peers and games, and development of receptive and expressive language skills.

Now that we are back in person, the requested speech and language materials are vital to help us address these setbacks. They will enable us to provide targeted interventions to rebuild social communication skills, enhance language development, and close academic gaps that have widened during the pandemic.

The requested materials in this list would substantially improve the sessions for the students by addressing specific needs and enhancing various aspects of learning:

Social Growth: Books like "Should I Share my Ice Cream" by Mo Willems will foster social and emotional awareness, addressing the impact of isolation during the pandemic

Diverse Needs: Tools such as "Key Education Photo Conversation Cards" will support children with special needs, allowing for more personalized learning.

Comfort and Safety: Items like the air purifier will ensure a clean and comfortable environment, contributing to optimal learning conditions.

These resources will enhance the quality and safety of our sessions, accommodating diverse needs and creating a nurturing environment for academic and social growth.
