This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I teach at a school that embraces student diversity to its fullest with a Universal Design approach to learning. My students come from diverse academic, cultural, and economic backgrounds. The charter school I work at has created a very special learning community with a culturally responsive curriculum including a dual language program. Our students and their families are lucky to be immersed in their cultures and those of our country and school, while at the same time, becoming fluent in English and their home language of Spanish. Students’ empty backpacks do not show a lack of family care or investment in their child’s education, but instead, illuminate the fact that many of our families do not have the monetary resources to purchase the materials suggested as essential in the student material lists sent to families over the summer. Luckily, what our families cannot contribute financially, they make up easily with consistent support and involvement in their child’s education in other meaningful ways in and out of school!

Feeling prepared to learn and having the right materials to explore concepts and skills and complete assignments independently helps students develop into Expert Learners that have more confidence, initiative, and a growth mindset that says, “I have what I need to do my personal best!” Unfortunately, many students at my school will not arrive on the first day or week of school with a backpack full of exciting new materials they eagerly hand-picked at stores to support their learning this Fall.

Markers, colored pencils, composition journals, pencils, paper, folders, highlighters, pens, post-it notes, earbuds, rulers, scissors, and many other resources are more than just objects to students. These materials are “The Tools of the Trade” for a successful student!
