Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
This year I am teaching Advanced Placement, Honors, College Prep Biology, and Environmental Science. I am also advising the Eco Mindfulness and Garden Clubs. My students care about the environment, gardens, and campus beautification.
My clubs need cork boards, seedlings, a new button machine, button parts, and colorful pens to use for their various club activities.
Eco Mindfulness Club and Garden Club members need an additional button machine that is able to have interchangeable molds. Our current one can only punch out a 2 inch button. The button machine I am requesting can punch out 3 inches, 1 inch and heart shaped buttons.
My clubs need the Lettuce Grow seedling credits for our club's hydroponics stand. We have grown various herbs, lettuce, and flowers with our farmstand. Our members enjoy clipping back the produce and eating it. Our nutrition teacher came into one of my classes and we made a salad together and learned about local and seasonal veggies.
At our next field trip we will be going to our local Botanical Garden and we will learn about native plants. Students will create a button about their favorite native plant to learn about climate and the environment. Our Botanical Garden has a focus on natives, tropical and Mediterranean plants because those plants flourish in our climate. Students will also be taking photos on our plant scavenger hunt. We will print all of our photos to make displays on the requested cork boards to showcase the plant diversity we saw. Our last field trip was a bird field study and we can't wait for our next plant survey.
Lastly, my clubs are upcycling their old clothes and we will be tie dying them to give them a second life. Students need to wear lanyards when they are outside the class.
