My students need lab equipment to improve their understanding of buoyancy / density.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
By the end of the school year I want my students to improve their comprehension skills. Unfortunately this goal becomes more difficult when students only have a science book to learn about the concepts and no lab equipment for hands on activities.
My student population ranges greatly between students who are at grade level reading and comprehension and those that are at a below basic level.
Our school works very hard at helping students reach their potential but unfortunately sometimes we do not have the materials necessary to make the impact we would like to make. Regardless of their levels and the lack of materials my goal is to prepare them to be critical thinkers.
My Project
We recently covered buoyancy / density and students struggled with the concept because all we had was our book (2007 version) for reading and worksheets of graduated cylinders to learn the concept. I feel that if my students get the opportunity to use manipulatives and graduated cylinders to acquire volumes of irregular shape objects through submersion, it will spark their interest in the subject matter and improve their understanding.
Students who are at the lower end of their reading and comprehension level struggle significantly with mathematical concepts that are part of our physical science class.
Having the opportunity to physically submerge irregular shaped objects and using a graduated cylinder to calculate the volume of the objects (through water displacement) will spark an interest in the subject matter. There is nothing more memorable than the actual process of doing something versus completing worksheets.
