Materials for New Students with Autism & Visual Impairments
My students need light kits, big screen microscopes with slides to be shown using bright light, feel and discover science bags, and science games and folders for science.

My Students
What is it like to not have the ability to hear, see, talk, or even walk? Half of my students are confined to wheelchairs and cannot speak or see. Each student needs hands-on assistance and total-care throughout the day. Three of my students have Autism and need multiple visuals and much assistance.
My students are a joy to be around as each of them brings a something special to the classroom.
These students are my life and I want to help each of them grow. My students are enrolled in a public separate school setting for students with moderate to severe cognitive disabilities. Each of these students are new to my classroom. I have three girls who are all in wheelchairs. They cannot see or speak and depend on my assistants and I for complete care in the classroom. I also have six boys, one of which is in a wheelchair. He cannot see or speak. He needs total care during the day as well. One of the boys cannot walk without constant supervision and assistance, while the other five must be supervised and guided during instruction and during times of instructions throughout the day. Three of the students have Autism, while the others have multiple disabilities that affect each part of their daily lives. All of my students need hands-on materials that are vivid and tactile.
My Project
I am requesting an "Exploring Light Activity Kit" and "Big Screen Microscope" (and AC adapter) so that my students who have visual impairments may explore materials, while using assistive technology, by utilizing light. I have included a set of slides so that my students may use the light in order to engage the materials on the slides on the large microscope. A "Sort and Match Science Games" and "Feel and Discover Science Bags" were included so that my visually impaired students, as well as those with Autism, may explore all of the areas of science by touching and feeling the necessary manipulatives for learning. I have also requested two different sets of "Science File Folder Games Library" so that my students who have Autism may have the visuals required for them to access the many ideas in the science curriculum. Without hands-on and vivid materials, my students cannot access the curriculum completely and so their likelihood of success is lessened during instruction.
This project is important because my students need every opportunity that is available for them to engage the school and classroom setting.
My hope is to touch my students in such a way that they may grow and succeed in every way that is possible. I believe that the possibilities for success are endless for my students no matter the disability. All I need now are the materials, as each student is new to my classroom and each of them have specific learning and care needs.
