My Project
I am the only Licensed Teacher of the Visually Impaired who works for the Special Education Cooperative where I have worked for 7 years. I work with students from the age of 3 through 22 years old. Some of my students are high-achieving students who are completely blind and use Braille to access their education. Some of my students are in a Living and Learning classroom where they are learning functional life skills rather than grade-level, academic information. My students’ skills vary so much from one student to the next throughout each day. For this reason, it has been difficult to find (and afford) materials that are both engaging for my young learners and appropriate for my high school students in the functional classroom. For example, a high school student in the functional class could use magnetic tiles on a light board to improve visual motor skills, rather than using traditional blocks that a young child would use. He would feel like he is completing an age-appropriate task rather than completing a task using toys that are much too young for his age. I also love to make my own materials to adapt them to each child’s likes and skills, but many of my students engage best with light-up materials or activities that make noises. That is beyond my skill level. I appreciate any materials purchased for my students. It means so much to me that there are amazing people who want to help us reach our students more effectively.
