My Students
It is hard to find ways to connect math and literacy. This fun and thought-provoking series will help teachers by using reading to better explain geometry and other math concepts.
Our middle school is situated in a rural, low income, high poverty community where 2/3 of the student body receives free or reduced-price lunch.
Our school has a mission of building upon the basic belief that our students are individuals of diversified interests, aptitudes, talents, and goals. We seek to offer a program which accepts each student for who he is, and offers him a diversified program of educational equity and reality-based relevance to the world beyond the classroom.
My Project
"When King Arthur and his knights get together, the table they have is so long that everyone has to shout to be heard. A rectangular table is too long and a triangular table is too pointy, but somehow they must sit down and discuss the shape of the future."
This is only one example of where a teacher could use the text from the Sir Cumference book series by Cindy Neuschwander that has been requested to provide countless opportunities for students to solve mathematical problems.
It was recently said in one of our professional development sessions that "rigor and relevance" make excellence possible.
At our school we are striving to make education both rigorous and relevant for our students. These resources will enable students to make the connections necessary to promote a better comprehension of both math and reading skills.
