Materials For Independent Reading

My students need 1 copy each of 33 high interest books, including works by Walter Dean Myers, Stephanie Meyer, Jerry Spinelli and J.K. Rowling.

FULLY FUNDED! Ms. Chiavola's classroom raised $427

This project is fully funded

I teach high school English in East Harlem in New York City. It's a high needs, high performing high school with a great student body. They are pleasant, fun, full of energy and extremely bright. They show respect for one another and really love learning. The students are to read independently everyday, however they are supposed to read materials of their choice and the process is supposed to be enjoyable and personal. As of now, not much of what I've got is what they want to read so there is a lot of negotiating as to who will read what.

Unfortunately, my students do not have access to the library right now and our classroom library is a little dated. They keep asking for new books that we don't currently have so I thought this would be a good way to get the books they are requesting so they can discover enjoyment in reading!

I need high-interest young adult literature. They really enjoy "Manga", graphic novels and all of the new series that are coming out as well as poetry, realistic fiction and non-fiction.

Your help will give my students a chance to discover a love for reading that, as of now, a lot of them think they do not have. I believe everybody likes to read something and if I expect them to engage in independent reading, then I need to give them books that they will enjoy.
