My Students

A child's classroom is their place. It should be an environment that calls to them, one that makes learning natural and fun. I am striving to create that environment for my students on a limited budget.

My students are knowledge seeking first graders who love coming to school each day to discover what part of the world will be opened to them that day through reading.

The majority of my learners are from low income homes that may not be able to provide them with the literacy rich environment that is so crucial to their learning. I am committed to providing that for them.

My Project

My students need word work materials including magnetic letters and alphabet stamps, rolling cart storage, and comfortable furniture for sustained reading. My students will use the materials every day. They will be able to choose materials from the Word Work station to practice spelling words, sight words and vocabulary words that we encounter in our texts. The students will be able to stamp words, form them with play dough and flexible sticks and otherwise engage in activities to practice words. The students will also be more independent with storage for these items. My students will work throughout the year on their reading stamina. If I expect my students to sustain reading for upwards of 20 minutes per session, I must provide them with a comfortable place to read.

This project will transform my classroom.

It will make my classroom environment one that invites children to have a place of their own to learn and explore in the ways that are developmentally appropriate to this age level. We will meet the vigorous state and federal standards in a way that continues to motivate them.
