Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Third grade is a very difficult mathematical year for students. My goal is to have my students excited about learning math as much as I am to teach it! Manipulatives and games help students develop conceptual understanding of mathematical ideas by representing the ideas in multiple ways.
My students are eager to learn and bursting with ideas!
Unfortunately, they live in a school district that is constantly overlooked and underfunded. The school I work in is an independent charter school. We do not rely on corporate funding, and there is no large network funding available. My students and I rely on the generosity of others, and/or what I can spare from my own salary. With your help, you not only help my students but every student that is denied the opportunity because they were born into economic disadvantage.
My Project
My students need Tangrams, Math Big Book Favorites, Math Bingo Library, Build & Learn Area & Perimeter Kit, and a Small-Group Teaching Easel. My students will be able to use the games during small group math centers time. The manipulatives will be used during whole class and small group instruction as well as the easel. The small table-top easel allows for me to re-teach small targeted groups of struggling students.
Donations to this project will ensure that my students have a clearer visual understanding of mathematical concepts such as fractions.
When there is less confusion, deeper understanding can begin to take hold, develop, and grow, thereby laying the ground work for future mathematic learning. It is also important to recognize that when there is less confusion or conflict of mathematical ideas in a student’s mind, then there are fewer meaningless rules to remember or commit to memory
