Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"Teach the children well and let them lead the way," this line is from Greatest Love of All, by Michael Masser and Linda Creed. And I firmly believe what the song says. In this day and age of technology, it is still vital that children have the opportunity to use technology on a regular basis. We need to teach children strong technological skills because they will, one day, lead the way in this technological age.

My students come from very diverse backgrounds.

They also have diverse ability levels. We are in a large school district that has been severely hit by budget cuts. We have very few supplies and there is definitely no money to be spent on "extras." My class is full of curious students who love to learn through hands-on lessons. They are bright and enjoy learning. They need exposure to lessons that cannot be taught using just the materials supplied by our district.

My Project

It is vital that students get early exposure to and learning about financial literacy so that they can be wise savers, spenders, and investors when they start earning money. I have a rewards program in my classroom which utilizes a register (like a checkbook register). Students deposit and withdraw money from their accounts and every three weeks or so we have a silent auction where they can spend their money. I want to build on this real life learning by doing some lessons from Take Charge America.

Take Charge America is a nonprofit which provides financial education lessons to teach financial literacy.

They have ten lessons specifically aimed at 5th graders. Each lesson requires a different text.

I want to provide my students with two of these texts so that they can deepen their learning in financial literacy. "Can't You Make Them Behave, King George?" will help the students learn about government goods and services. This text serves a dual purpose as the English rule in America and the Revolutionary War are part of our learning in Social Studies. "The Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler" will assist the students in learning about saving and creating a personal budget.
