My Students

Every day in our classroom is filled with learning and exploration. We have just begun our new unit on clothing, and my girls are incredibly excited to learn more about something they enjoy.

My classroom has 13 little girls ages 3 and 4.

They are smart, silly, and always loving. All of my students have grown immensely since the first day of school and it is amazing to see how far they have come. Our school is located in Washington, D.C. and most of my students come from low-income households. Despite many of the challenges my students face in and out of school, they begin each day with an eagerness to learn and be part of our classroom family. This is certainly the most energetic and caring group of students I have taught thus far.

My Project

We are requesting materials to go along with our clothing unit. We are asking for different things such as buttons to sort and sew, felt to create textiles, and materials to make tie-dye t-shirts. Most of these materials will be used during our centers time or small groups. Each day, students have about an hour or so to engage in different interest centers around the classroom. They are allowed to move freely between the centers depending on what is most interesting to them. They will use the buttons to sort by shape, color and size which is a math skill we are currently working on. We will discuss textiles and how they are made and they will use the felt, elastic, plastic needles, and yarn to create their own textile. We would also love to have the students create their own tie-dye t-shirt at the end of the unit to celebrate our learning and have something our students can keep and wear.

Without these donations, my students are limited to learning about clothing through pictures and examples of things I can provide.

It would be amazing for them to be able to create their own textiles and really get a hands on experience with different materials that go into making clothing. Not only will we be able to use these materials in an artistic way, but we can use them to supplement our math, literacy, and social studies lessons as well.
