My Students
Can you imagine teaching a new group of students and starting in an empty space with not one desk, chair or book in it?! We are slowly building our room one area at a time and we have no literacy materials to help my students become great readers.
My students are from different non-English speaking backgrounds and many of them don't even have a book at home to call their own.
Their families are hard working but many are unable to provide their children with more than basic necessities. At our school is the only place they are able to read, converse with others about literature, or even get the attention they need in order to grow as learners. All of my students have special needs, some more challenging than others. The children who have difficulty communicating need to become great readers even more so that they can free their minds from the constraint of their bodies. I want more than anything for them to know the feelings of accomplishment and self-worth. So many of them have struggled so much in their short lives and reading gives them a real sense of hope and accomplishment. They are in a small class setting so that they can get the individual attention they need every day in order to grow and develop - to be successful.
My Project
I am requesting an easel to guide students, comfortable pillows to sit on, literacy activities, dictionaries to look up unknown words and sensory objects to hold while engaging in learning. If my students receive materials so that I can teach them to read, they will be able to begin to decode text and become more fluent readers. Having literacy and phonics materials and a comfortable spot to grow and learn in our classroom will give my students access to the freedom of reading! This will enable them to be successful in school and feel great about themselves! When children are successful readers, they will become effective learners as they transfer these skills across the curriculum.
If my students receive these activities, pillows, sensory objects and easel, they will be able to do more in our classroom.
They can engage in literature, deepen their understanding of text and further their knowledge across the spectrum.
