My fifth grade classroom is located in the East Village, a lively neighborhood in downtown Manhattan. Our school is dedicated to providing "an environment where all children and all families are valued, welcomed, cared for and supported" (quoted from our mission statement).
My students are passionate about social justice, and have strong opinions on just about everything!
They are hungry to learn, and their eyes light up when we explore new topics or resources. Our classroom is a beautiful mix of races, cultures, socioeconomic backgrounds, and gender identities.
My Project
I am requesting an assortment of different materials that all serve a singular purpose: to support individual students' learning needs in my classroom.
The two wobble chairs will allow my fidgety, always in-motion students to "wobble" while we meet on the rug, without tipping over their chairs or sprawling on our benches.
In addition, I know these beautiful and moveable stools will be a highly coveted seat during independent work-time.
The noise-cancelling headphones will be very helpful for my students who need complete quiet to focus while they work independently. These tools will also assist these students in being advocates for their learning needs. Rather than coming to ask me to quiet the class, students will be able to take a pair of headphones for themselves instead.
Finally, the letter magnets and stamps will be a huge aid in our Spelling Club, which meets weekly to support two of my students' desire to improve their spelling. All of the materials will make a huge difference to individual students' needs this year!
