Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

How do the materials we use effect our ability to live in a sustainable world? "Green" education is a popular topic, but it goes beyond "plant a tree." With these material samples, I hope to begin a unit investigating green building including heat gain based on the construction material.

My students attend an urban K-12 school that is high minority and high poverty.

It is a "school of choice" and is unique within our district. While the area is high poverty, the students who attend here are on a college preparatory track. Achievement is expected no matter their background. We have created a small community culture of support to help them reach their goals. They have had very little hands on science experience, in part because the school does not have the materials. We are raising student performance in science by introducing as many laboratory activities as possible with direct links to real world application. Unfortunately the economic crisis is hitting hard here in Nevada and our district has cut our budget severely. There are simply no funds to purchase materials for laboratory work. We are reduced to seeking pictures and demonstrations on the Internet to SHOW science instead of being able to DO science.

My Project

Living sustainably is a huge topic in today's world and many, many scientific ideas can help us understand exactly what this means. I hope to teach my students science concepts in a way in which they don't just understand the theory, but the application to such modern topics of interest. With these samples of different materials, I hope to teach students how material choice in construction effects the physical properties of the building as we explore the broader concept of energy exchange. By discovering the heat capacity and density of various materials and applying that new knowledge to heat gain in buildings we will be better able to explore the idea of living sustainably. These materials will be used in the first step in our energy exchange unit.

College bound students with such a small background need the experience hands-on laboratory work can provide them just as much as they need to see how their in class work links to the "real world." Through this project they will take an esoteric scientific concept - energy exchange - and apply it to a real world situation they can see effecting their own lives.
