My students need some snacks like rice crispy treats, oreos and jolly ranchers, for incentives while learning their vocabulary and for a good job on tests.

My Students

I teach middle school science at an inner city school. Having a treat to reward students for their hard work, really goes a long way.

It is truly amazing to see students go from uninterested to completely involved and excited to learn at the presence of the Jolly Rancher bag.

I am very proud to say my middle school students master their vocabulary words and remember them for years to come with such an easy incentive.

My Project

I would love to have Jolly Ranchers to hand out to students for learning their vocabulary words and doing a good job on their tests. It's amazing how every student enjoys a Jolly Rancher and gets excited when I pull the bag out. Even my eighth graders, who are too cool for school, will sit up and pay attention when the Jolly Ranchers come out. They even work a little harder when they know a little bag or Oreo or a rice crispy treat can be earned for getting a good grade on a test.

Often times incentives at school are frowned upon, but really we all work for incentives, ours is a pay check.

I like to keep my kids motivated and excited about their learning and if an Oreo or a Jolly Rancher does the trick, then lets do what we can to close the achievement gap!
