This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are a diverse group of amazing fourth graders full of life, energy, and curiosity! They love digging into learning with their minds, hearts, and hands. They come from a variety of backgrounds and face many challenges, including poverty, abuse, mental and emotional health issues, and family discord.

Many of them love the stability and structure that the classroom provides.

It is in the classroom that they learn about themselves and the world. They learn how to face challenges, fail without giving up, interact with others, build relationships, and impact their world.

Students feel most comfortable and learn better in a clean and comfortable environment. The traditional classroom seating arrangement does not meet the needs of today’s students. Flexible seating is a must.

My Project

Elementary students spend the majority of their day in one classroom. That room needs to be clean, comfortable, and inspirational. Students should find the room attractive and inviting, even cool. Traditional seating does not do that, nor does it meet the attention and activity levels of today’s students. A carpet provides a comfortable place for whole group instruction, small groups, and even independent work. It also helps to manage noise levels in the classroom. It’s an added bonus that the carpet features cursive letters. Cursive writing is a dying skill, but students really want to learn this skill. They will enjoy seeing cursive writing everyday, and no doubt be motivated to practice.

Flexible seating is a must for today’s students.

I have a very small classroom, in a portable building. Traditional desks and chairs don’t fit and limit the amount of space in the classroom. We are often too cramped to spread out and students don’t have the personal space they need. This leads to conflict between students and behavior issues. The stools and portable desks are great. The stools are smaller than chairs and fit compactly under desks. The portable desks allow students to work on the carpet (if the class has one) or other areas in the school, like the courtyard. Students love being able to work in flexible groups and these portable desks are perfect.

It may appear that these items are luxuries, but in order to meet the challenges of today’s students, differentiate instruction, modify for unique learners, and ENJOY teaching and learning, these things are a necessity.
