My students need art supplies--fabric markers, craft sticks, and aprons--so we can teach art history and hands-on art activities to 120 kinder students.
Have you ever seen a kindergarten version of one of Georgia O'Keefe's flower paintings? One word - AMAZING! Our students are facing the possibility of losing their introduction to art, based on our district's budget cuts. Simply stated, this would be a travesty for these future leaders.
I team-teach art to our 120 enthusiastic kindergartners.
Our school is a moderate poverty school in a district of "choice" - we are not a neighborhood school. Instead, our students come from all over our vast city, representing all socioeconomic classes, and are ethnically and culturally diverse. Some students come from single-parent families, some from multi-generational homes, and many speak English as their second language. But, the one thing we all share is the desire to learn, and a love for art!
My Project
Our school has a priority to introduce students, from kinder through grade 5, to art history and art appreciation. The program exposes students to varied styles, works and artists - such as Mary Cassatt, Frida Kahlo and Vincent Van Gogh, to name a few. The projects encourage a process of discovery, while helping students gain understanding of an artist or art movement.
We need art supplies--fabric markers, craft sticks, and aprons--so we can teach art history and hands-on art activities to 120 kinder students. These supplies will be used to introduce this art instruction to our kindergarten students. With the help of parent volunteers, we will conduct messy, exciting, fun art projects at school that will open the students' minds to the arts. My kinder kids will use these supplies to experiment, create their own masterpieces, and broaden their view of the world of art.
Can't you just picture a kindergartner's version of a Georgia O'Keefe flower done with fabric markers and craft sticks? These requested supplies will go right into the hands of excited students ready to create.
Due to our district's budget cuts, it is more than likely that we will lose all funding to continue the arts in the classroom.
Grant donations are necessary to ensure that our kindergartners are capable of having access to this important education.
