Mastering Standards A Few Manipulatives At A Time!
My students need coins, dry erase number lines, hundreds boards, and fraction multiplier cards in order to reinforce the standards that students are unable to master.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are excited to learn math this year! They yearn to demonstrate their multiplication, division, or addition math facts through sprints to earn their stickers! Most importantly, they can't wait to put their hands on manipulatives in order to solve math story problems.
I work at a Title 1 school in which more than 90% of my students are on free, or reduced lunch and over 50% of my students are English Language Learners.
Many have multiple responsibilities at home that don't involve completing homework or being students. Nonetheless, my students are resilient and persistent. They love school and want to learn!
My students are under performing in math. They are the students who aren't passing their math benchmarks and who are tackling dyslexia or a learning disability but are not diagnosed yet.
My Project
These materials will address specific standards that my students are struggling to master. My 3rd and 4th graders are struggling to recognize coins and add them together to find a total. The hands-on coins will give students the opportunity to feel, touch, and hold coins so that they can become familiar with their characteristics and be able to identify a penny, nickel, dime, or quarter on a standardized test and their values. My students in grades 3, 4, and 5 are struggling with basic number sense. They don't know how to count by 10, the different between even and odd, or patterns on a hundreds chart. The 100s boards will allow me to teach characteristics in a lesson but then move towards applying these skills in games. We know children love to learn through a game! Lastly, my 5th graders are struggling with multiplying and dividing fractions. The fraction multipliers would make it so that I can begin with the concrete as opposed to picture models.
Please help my students master these standards that are important not only to pass the end of year test, but to grasp mathematics and apply concepts in more challenging math courses in the future.
