Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Math isn't just about rote memorization of basic math facts... It's about problem solving, strategizing, and thinking outside the box. My students love to problem solve, but need a place to record their thinking and learning!

My 30 first grade students are eager learners and love to come to school every day.

All of my students receive free lunch, and many of these children lack basic necessities at home. Over half of my students are English Language Learners, which makes learning academic language in school even more important. Despite the obstacles my students face, they are respectful, hard-working, and dedicated to doing their best.

My Project

I am requesting a class set of Problem Solving Journals to boost our math curriculum to a level that really challenges the students and prepares them for the real world. These journals contain more than enough weekly problem solving prompts to last throughout the year. The problems are written in a way that students can understand, and space is provided for students to draw a picture, make a table, and use other problem solving strategies. Most importantly, students are asked to explain their reasoning and how they reached a particular answer. This is extremely valuable to students as we discuss different strategies for solving problems and justifying the answers we give. These journals will also help me track individual student progress and growth throughout the year, as well as to better understand how to meet each child's math and language needs.

All students should have access to quality learning materials and be pushed to do their very best.

By donating a class set of Problem Solving Journals to my students, you will help my students become great thinkers and learn problem solving strategies that will last a lifetime.
