Mastering Math with Manipulatives

My students need supplies and manipulatives to help them grow as mathematicians deepening their understanding of place value, fractions, and decimals. We need a fractions hands-on Kit, place value coins and notebooks.

My Students

My students are incredible. Each day they face so much, in and outside of the classroom, and yet we always find a reason to laugh and grow together as a class.

I teach at a Title 1 school on the Southside of Chicago.

100% of my students receive free and reduced breakfast and lunch. Outside our classroom walls they face many challenges most 9 year-olds could ever imagine. But inside our classroom we work hard together to build a safe, fun learning environment where we are family and what goes on outside of school doesn't get in our way of being scholars.

My Project

As I stated before, I work in a Title 1 school. Many of my students do not come to school with the supplies they need to be successful - pencils, notebooks, folders, etc. These supplies will help my students be prepared for their learning each day.

Manipulatives are essential in helping students deepen their understanding of mathematical concepts.

Fractions kits and place value kits will help students visualize and concretely demonstrate and model abstract concepts. For most of my students, this year will be their first exposure to high value numbers, fractions, and division. Having these manipulatives to help them learn such abstract ideas will set them up for success. Also, 4th grade is a big year for learning about lines and angles. How will they be successful without a good protractor?

All these supplies will help my students not only gain understanding of these new math concepts, but will also help them understand how their new learning can be applied to the real world that surrounds them.
