Mastering Math, One First Grader at a Time

My students need math boards for math meeting work and a variety of games and activities for math centers.

My Students

Math is one of those subjects that is just hard to grasp. It's hard to understand math without being able to play around with it, move it around, or see it off of paper. Right now, my students are generally just looking and seeing, when they need to be understanding and doing more.

My students are eager first graders from Washington, DC.

They attend a high performing charter school in the nation's capital that is focused on rigorous academics and preparing all students for high school and college. They love math! First grade math, though, isn't the same as when we were all in first grade. It is getting harder by the day and my students are working hard to keep up with all of the new advances. These students and their families are hardworking and devoted to education which is seen through their attendance, their commitment to homework, and their eagerness to do what they can to succeed.

My Project

The resources I am requesting are a variety of centers materials, games, and visuals that will enhance my students' math education. They will be able to see numbers in multiple ways, play games to practice the new skills they are learning, and practice their addition and subtraction facts. The write and wipe boards will be extremely useful for the students to use during math meeting to stay focused and participate. They will be able to immediately use a new skill or strategy that is taught on the boards or work out a posed problem. All of these materials will allow the students to work on their skills and strategies in new, different ways.

These materials will be used in the same classroom by 60 students.

My first graders are departmentalized, meaning they rotate classes. With these new materials that will encourage them to explore math, they will get to have some extra fun while they learn. They will also get to conceptualize math in another way that will aide in their learning.
