My Students

I have seven students in a K-2 autism classroom. Most of my students have limited verbal skills and do not communicate much on their own. They have varying levels of academic skills and the majority are working on learning basic skills, as well as communication and social skills.

We have a structured routine throughout the day with many hands-on and independent activities.

We have a morning routine that students look forward to every day; independent work time where students practice working by themselves on skills they have mastered; group time to work on academic skills and writing; story time to work on comprehension, math, science and art time where we create creative and colorful projects using construction paper and following picture directions. They have made so much progress so far this year with academic, social and communication skills.

My Project

My students are constantly working on mastering basic skills. Sometimes it may take a while before a child masters certain skills such as alphabet letter recognition or counting to 10 or 20. In order to practice these skills, students need a variety of materials so they are actually learning the skill, not just memorizing an activity. Students are also working on generalizing the reading and math skills they are learning so they know each skill in a variety of settings and with different people.

My students work hard each day and have many opportunities to practice learning basic skills.

We have small group instruction and whole group instruction where students are working on the goals in their IEP. All of the counting activities will be added to our math groups so students can use hands-on materials to work on counting. My students do really well using manipulatives to practice counting and learning the alphabet letters and sounds.

The reading activities will help with sequencing as students are learning how to sequence story events in order. The alphabet activities will help students work on learning alphabet letters and sounds. My students make a lot of progress throughout the year and one way they continue to progress and learn is by having a variety of different activities to work on basic skills.
