My students need two tripod magnifiers and prepared specimens to dissect for evidence of evolution (to see if we have a common ancestor with other animals), including a mammal, a bird, a fish, an amphibian, a jellyfish, and a reptile.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
We are a unique high school program offering hope and an exciting education to our city's most troubled youth. Our students come to us as a last chance to stay out of jail, so for them the stakes are extremely high. We offer a challenging and exciting curriculum that addresses the most important issues of our day. Our science program addresses the state and national teaching standards and has a strong writing component. Our school is collaboration between behavioral councilors therapist, probation officers, and highly motivated teachers and volunteers.
The first thing students ask when they meet me as their science teacher is "when are we going to dissect something?" They tell me that they have have had very little opportunity to do hands-on science. These inner-city youth, who are all on probation, are the neediest students in California. They are also naturally curious and adventurous and want learning to be exciting, while safe. They have had enough of the gang violence that surrounds them. They have lost many friends and family members to prison or to death from street violence. Our schools are facing a 10% budget cut and there is a freeze on spending, so without help we may not be able to do the dissections this year.
We refuse to let anything stand in our way when it comes to providing answers to the problems our students face. We believe in them and connect them to caring people willing to give them a chance. We are collaborating with City College by offering students concurrent enrollment in high school and college science, through an Emergency Medical Technition (EMT) Training class. The students are learning to save lives rather than take them, and many are interested in the medical field. This project will also be supported by the head of a local medical school surgery unit. He will participate with the students in their dissections. All specimens will be dissected at the same time which allows the students to make anatomical comparisons, leading to the question: "Is it possible that we have a common ancestor"? The dissections will be followed by a question and answer session with the surgeon. Who includes a discussion on opportunities for youth to further their studies and get going on a positive track.
With your help we can bring a powerful learning experience to these students who are at an important crossroad in their lives. What ever you can donate will make a difference, every donation sends the message that someone cares, and believe me, our students are paying attention.
