Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students would like to share with the world their definition of SELF and IDENTITY, these masks will allow them to do that in an artistic and creative way!

My students are Latino/a and come from a high poverty environment.

Many have broken homes and lack social supports that many take for granted. This project asks students to inspect their inner being and then outwardly express their IDENTITY for the world to see. It is a unit on maturation and self-discovery.

My Project

We will purchase these masks which will become the backdrop/canvas for students to use text, symbolism and any other means of communication to creatively express their Self and Identity. These masks will connect directly to the literature that we have studied in class BRONX MASQUERADE by Nikki Grimes and will allow students the opportunity to share their world view and self-conception with he class and the entire school.

Students lack opportunities to be creative and use art to communicate about their ideas and worldview.

This lesson makes the reading we have done in class come alive and is a tactile/authentic learning experience which will breathe life into the themes which we have studies and help shape students sense of SELF and IDENTITY during their critical early teens years.
