My students need acrylic paint, gesso, and brushes to create masks that symbolize what they have learned about a character in Shakespeare's Macbeth.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Two English teachers, one drama teacher, and myself (an art teacher) have joined forces to give our 250 9th and 10th graders an interdisciplinary chance to read, act, and design their own version of Shakespeare's Macbeth. We are doing this because our free, public, college-prep charter school believes ALL kids must read and analyze challenging texts. We want to give our students (who are mostly "first generation college bound" African Americans and Latinos), the tools that will allow them to interact with and unlock these texts so they will be successful in college.
The first step on this path is teaching students how to connect an abstract text to the physical, "hands-on" world. Therefore students will read Macbeth in English, develop masque theater scenes in drama, and make symbolic masks in art. Working in "designer/client" pairs, students will create symbolic masks that use the elements of design to convey their character's complexity, and then perform scenes from the play by employing physical theater. Finally, they will write a 5-paragraph essay that identifies a theme from the play and applies it to the analysis of their character.
We believe the curriculum is sound and exciting, but we don't have the money for art supplies. Your support will allow us to purchase over forty quarts of student-grade acrylic paint, 5 gallons of gesso, and hundreds of brushes that students will use to make their masks. Without these supplies, students won't be able to demonstrate their understanding of complex metaphors, character motivation, and personality traits in such a creative, symbolic, and complex way.
We know that students who are confident readers and who are equipped with the tools to make meaning out of difficult texts are more likely to succeed in and graduate from college. If 9th and 10th grade students feel success reading and analyzing Shakespeare, just imagine what they'll accomplish as 11th and 12th graders (and beyond!) I hope you will give us the chance to offer this exciting and rigorous experience to our students.
