This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are 20 preschoolers living in a diverse neighborhood who attend a large public school receiving Title I funds within an even larger school system. The majority of my students are English Language Learners, and a variety of beautiful languages are heard throughout the day in our class. At four and five years old, my preschool classroom is their first time being in an educational environment with other students.

It is a time of many proud "firsts" and remarkable moments of questioning, discovery, and exploration.

My students are very social, and they have an unbridled passion for trying new things and solving problems. Preschool is a time to nurture natural wonder and curiosity and to set the foundations for skills and habits that will follow my students as they continue with their educational experiences.

I am always looking for new ways to feed my students' interests. I change the materials and layout of my classroom throughout the year to provide them with the best learning environment that caters to their interests. Going into our third school year during a pandemic has increased my awareness of meeting the wide variety of changing needs of my students.

My Project

My preschoolers love school! They are excited to come to our classroom each day, love sharing stories with their friends, and are eager to learn together. Face masks are a basic classroom safety tool, and a part of our everyday lives. I have been able to purchase additional child-sized face masks and store them in my classroom, but as the first few weeks of school have passed, my extra supplies are quickly running low. As we head into the colder months, I am trying to plan ahead for the needs of my students.

Living and learning as a preschooler in a pandemic, disposable face masks are a basic classroom necessity.

I have asked our families to bring extra face masks to leave in their child's cubby if possible, and many have been able to do so. However, knowing my preschoolers - and how often they have the opportunity to eat, exercise, and interact with one another - many of their face masks need to be changed several times throughout the day. Whether they are excitedly telling me a story, pull the face mask down too quickly to take a sip of water and the strap breaks, or spill food on it during lunch, many students go through several masks a day.

Having colorful and bright backup disposable face masks available will help take some of the financial strain off of my student's families, and will also provide me and my students with an additional level of comfort and support, knowing that we have the necessary tools to keep all students safe and healthy all day long.
