Marvelous Mosaic Mural to Inspire Happiness

My students need mosaic materials to complete a mural that will inspire happiness as students enter the school building each day.

My Students

My favorite teacher of all time was my fourth grade teacher, and I want to be that to my students. I am a fourth grade teacher who needs to teach my students art along with all other standard school subjects. On top of that we have no money in our budget for art supplies. I am caught in a catch 22.

My fourth grade students attend a charter school in Michigan.

The class that I have this year is a once in a lifetime class. They are 17 amazingly bright individuals. They are respectful, creative, appreciative, and LOVE art. Our building does not have an art teacher due to budget woes so it is required that all classroom teachers teach art. Lucky for my students I was an art major in college. I expose them to various artists and art forms. However, there is no money for art supplies so some projects that I want to do with them, I am unable to. Because of the maturity of this class, I am able to go above and beyond with projects. They listen and follow directions extremely well. They produce phenomenal work!

My Project

Many students do not arrive to school on a good note. Either they didn't get enough to eat at breakfast, if anything at all; they had a fight with Mom or Dad, or didn't get enough sleep. For many students where I work, school is a safe place. I want the first thing for students to see when they enter the school building to be a bright, cheerful mural that makes them smile. Not only will this project affect my students it will affect the other 100 in the building. My fourth graders will be a part of something that stays up in the building long after they go to high school. I want them to come back, visit, and remember that they were a part of designing and creating the mosaic mural. My students will take a school wide poll to see what makes students happy. From the results, they will design and create a 2'x 4' mosaic mural. The few supplies I am seeking funding for are just enough to affect 150 kids in a positive way.

You will be helping students start their day off on a good note the moment they enter the building. It will also help my students take a closer look at what makes people happy. It will give them a hands-on approach to art they normally wouldn't be given and the impression will last a lifetime.
