Marvelous Mathematicians Need Magnificent Manipulatives
My students need math manipulatives that will give them a solid foundation of number sense. Activities monitored by the jumbo timer will build their sense of time.

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
By the end of the year, I would like my students not only to be on grade level in their math proficiency, but also to have strong number sense and a curiosity about numbers. My biggest challenge in getting them there is not having the resources to most effectively teach them in the time I have.
My students love learning!
They are first graders who have incredible buy-in and dedication to their education, even at such a young age. They come to school ready to learn and work hard every day. About 90 percent of our students qualify for free or reduced lunch. Our school has a School Improvement Grant. We are located in a low-income and working class neighborhood.
My Project
My students get excited about math and the various hands-on ways it can be presented. Having their own manipulatives (namely the personal hundreds charts and ten frames) to work with gives them ownership of their learning. They feel empowered to experiment with numbers. The larger items (magnetic ten frame and hundreds pocket chart) will allow me as their teacher to model how to use these manipulatives and also use them in whole-class activities, discussions, and instruction. The jumbo timer will teach the students a sense of time where they will be able to self-monitor themselves, knowing how much time they have to complete an assignment or activity.
My focus for my students is on providing the highest quality of instruction possible.
When my time is taken up making manipulatives and teaching tools, I am not able to provide as substantial lessons as I would like. Providing me with these teaching tools will allow me to focus on my lessons. I have simpler, less durable versions of some of the items I am requesting, but because they are less durable, I continually have to take the time to remake and improve them.
