This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our fingers and toes need a break! Common Core is upon us and math instruction is taking a different shift than when we were in school. Students need to explore and manipulate numbers in different ways to better develop their understanding of number concepts.
My students are enthusiatic learners who strive to reach their full potential each and every day.
They love to share their knowledge with their peers, teacher and parents. Our classroom environment is one where we are constantly trying to improve ourselves and help one another out. Peer coaching is one strategy we utilize on an everyday basis.
We are a half day Kindergarten program which means I have two classes for 2.5 hours each day. My morning class consists of 15 students and my afternoon class has 20 students. We are proud to be apart of an A+ School of Excellence.
My Project
The Common Core Math Learning Centers will be utilized during our math block. These supplies will enable us to develop many different math concepts within the same class period. It will allow my students to engage in rich math talk as they explain to one another how they solved a problem. They will learn how to manipulate numbers in various ways from working with ten frames to visually show a number, to breaking the number into different parts. Such as 8 can be broken up into 3 and 5. They will be able to use manipulatives to physically show these concepts and build their way to more abstract representations by using number sentences and symbols.
My students will gain valuable learning experiences through the use and exploration with the different math learning centers.
They will be able to guide their own learning and teach their peers their thought process by solving various real life problems. Lets face it, we all learn differently. The more exposure and experiences I can bring to my students' lives the richer their knowledge base will become and continue with them for many years ahead.
