My students are kindergartners, primarily English Language Learners (ELLs), at a Title I public school in Queens, New York. For many of my students, this is their first time in school. Despite the language challenges they face, they are enthusiastic and eager to come to school to learn. Their hope and my goal is the same. It is for each child to meet with success daily. My students are in need of varying tools in order for them to further develop their physical, social-emotional, cognitive, and language skills.
My Project
These materials will be used for hands-on learning and problem solving that will keep the students engaged and making connections among mathematical topics.
These materials will be part of math work stations, providing the students opportunities to explore and develop mathematical understanding.
The students will have opportunities to play number/counting games, counting and comparing games, sorting activities, establish one-to-one matching when counting, create patterns.
Playing cards make useful math tools because they have numbers on them. They can be used to teach addition and subtraction or comparing numbers through games. Linking cubes can be used to teach patterning, place value, and measurement. They also visually demonstrate number concepts, such as counting, grouping, adding, and taking away. Magnetic numbers are helpful when counting, ordering, and identifying numbers.
