Marshmallow Catapults and Roller Coasters

My students need simple machines and force and motion activity tubs which contain everything you need to conduct experiments, such as marshmallow catapults and roller coasters.

It is important to provide a classroom environment that is challenging, enlightening, and intriguing to students of different abilities. I am a general education teacher in a high-needs district and we are in need of many materials to enrich the learning in our classroom. The children in my classroom come from various backgrounds and I try to differentiate the learning as much as possible in order to meet all of their needs.

I once dreaded hearing the words “I’m finished” from my top students. They speed through their work, turning in their essays or math assignments long before everyone else. While I often work with my students who were struggling in need-based groups, my “fast finishers” are off to educational computer sites or the latest Harry Potter book. I want to provide students with a fun center in the room where they can research topics they are interested in and conduct interesting experiments.

I would like to create a science center in my classroom for students to visit when they finish their work early. The simple machines and force and motion activity tubs contain everything you need to conduct experiments, such as building marshmallow catapults and creating a pulley system. Students race cars down ramps, build their own roller coasters, and watch balloon rockets zoom by. The materials at this center would help reinforce 4th grade science standards and would allow for extra research and enrichment.
