This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our school is a small elementary school with just under 400 students who come from suppressed economic backgrounds; over 90% receive free breakfast and free lunch. The majority of our students have had limited or no exposure to science, technology, engineering or math outside of the classroom.

For many of our students, thinking creatively is a struggle, thinking of questions to ask is a challenge, and feeling that it is okay to make mistakes is uncommon.

We strive to change that.

My Project

Last year, my students began a school-wide hydroponic vegetable garden. We educated ourselves on starting, maintaining, and harvesting our hydroponic vegetable garden. We built in a farm to school program which allows us to serve the vegetables and herbs we grow in our school cafeteria.

This year, as we continue our garden, our goal is sustainability- we are marketing our farm to school hydroponic garden concept as a means to build financial literacy; we want our students to know sustainability, fair market value, advertising, supply and demand, profit/loss, income/expense and entrepreneurship.

If awarded this project, my students will use the 3Doodlers to market, advertise, and label our farm to school garden. We will use our 3D creations to market and advertise for our on-campus farmers market, as well as to obtain a local community business partner.
